Evelyn Mckay writes:
The first full week of September ‘09 was important for me. In my rural community, as the school buses stopped for the local children on back-to-school days, my practice of Therapeutic Touch seemed to pick up momentum, too.
That very week, I was asked to visit a woman who needed help through the last days of her life. My other callers included a client who struggled with depression, one who had fibromyalgia, two who were recovering from cancer surgery, one who was coping with an illness that affected her brain and another who had severe back pain.
These people asked me for treatment of a complementary therapy called Therapeutic Touch, an energy field modality in which energy is consciously directed to one in need of healing. I have used this modality since 1982, with good results.
Each of these people was being seen by a physician, of course. However, they wanted help to cope with sleeplessness, sadness, pain, the effects of chemotherapy and a variety of other symptoms, so the weekly treatments were requested. For each of them, Therapeutic Touch treatments seemed to lessen some of the effects of illness and bring relief.
This modality operates on this simple concept: every living being is supported by three aspects of nature, by food which is taken in through the alimentary system, by breath which is taken in through the lungs, and by energy, which is absorbed into the body from a universal field which surrounds all living things. You might have heard this field referred to as ‘personal space’ or the ‘aura’. When the physical body feels unwell, this field expresses an imbalance which can be changed by trained practitioner like me. I have learned how to use my hands in this field around the body and without touching at all, can offer some relief. The client accepts the treatment and begins to feel better. Not cured, but able to cope in a better way.
This method was developed in the early 1970’s by two clever women, one being Dora Kunz, a natural healer, and the other, Dolores Krieger, a professor of Nursing Science at NYU. As they began to share this method, they taught mostly nurses. However, they soon realized that the method, simple and easily learned, could be practiced by anyone wanting to help another. I began to teach it to others in 1985 and by now, have shared this learning with more than 3,000 people.
It is pretty amazing, when you think of it, that within each of us is the ability to help others in such a simple, safe, easily learned and effective way!

The following description is a combination sentences taken from web sites listed below and put together for your quick reading. I suggest you go to the web sites at the bottom for a more detailed and thorough description of this modality and bibliographies for research and other professional articles on the topic.
Therapeutic Touch ™(TT) is a contemporary healing modality drawn from ancient practices and developed by Dora Kunz and Dolores Krieger. The practice is based on the assumptions that human beings are complex fields of energy, and that the ability to enhance healing in another is a natural potential. Over thirty doctoral & post doctoral dissertations as well as master theses have been done on Therapeutic Touch™.
Therapeutic Touch™ is used to balance and promote the flow of human energy. It is taught in colleges around the world and has a substantial base of formal and clinical research. This research has shown that TT is useful in reducing pain, improving wound healing, aiding relaxation, and easing the dying process. It can be learned by anyone with a sincere interest and motivation towards helping others.
Therapeutic Touch™ is a non-invasive procedure in which practitioners use their hands a few inches from the body in a variety of ways using calm and rhythmic hand movements to assess, clear, modulate and move areas of energy imbalance in the field. TT is a process that is always individualized and usually does not exceed 20 minutes. It may be as short as 5 minutes. The recipient remains fully clothed. TT is generally considered safe. Some of the reported side effects include nausea, dizziness, restlessness, and irritability. The client is advised to rest for a 10 to 15 minutes following the procedure and to drink water.
Therapeutic Touch™ is NOT able to diagnose illness, nor is it meant to take the place of sound medical advice. Treatments do not deplete the effectiveness of medical treatments or medications.
